GoGo Girls of the Apocalypse A Novel Victor Gischler Books
This book was one of Amazon's more persistent recommended titles. I'm guessing my love for Post-Apocalyptic and Dystopian fiction has influenced the Amazon computer in a narrow direction since all my titles at that time were in that general genre. Given the dark nature of most of the suggestions, the title of this one really caught my eye. I'm all for something new and, having read nothing of this author previously, I snagged it up.I actually really loved it! I read the other reviews and fully understand where they get their opinions from within the book but in my opinion, it's all about context! This isn't a doom and gloom read like "The Road" or a serious look at re-building or the after effects of apocalyptic events like "One Second After". Instead, its a tongue in cheek look at the wacky way we humans are with a pretty good story embedded in it.
I rather liked the protagonist, Mortimer Tate and I really enjoyed the distinct voices of the various side-kicks. The settings are genuinely inventive and, if you think hard about where people put priorities, it isn't at all outside the realm of possibility to have a bunch of strip clubs be the hub of the new world. We are what we are!
The set up is really engaging, with Tate inside his lonely hide-out and the way he gets introduced to this new world gets the story moving. It's hard to talk too much about some of the most interesting bits because it leads to spoiling. After all, if you knew he reaches location xyz in the company of Person X...well, then you know Person X survived the dangerous situations before that. No, I won't do that.
Overall, this was a really fast and really fun read that had hidden depths and meanings within it if you care to suss them out. The characters are well fleshed (no puns) and each has a distinct and clear voice. The cast is rather large but the core group is highly entertaining and even the bad guys each have their own flair.
This is recommended for readers who enjoy post-apocalyptic fiction but don't mind a bit of fun, dystopian fiction readers as well as those who like adventure fiction. Good read!

GoGo Girls of the Apocalypse A Novel Victor Gischler Books Reviews
I enjoyed this book. Although predictable, it was entertaining like apocalypse candy. The concept of restoring civilization by strip bars, was comical. The book was what I expected a light post-apocalypse read. If you're a fan of PA genre, it makes a nice change of pace from darker novels like "The Road."
I have to say I would not have enjoyed the book if I had paid the kindle price (which is more than the in print book!!). The book was good, but not worth 12 bucks. I don't understand how publishers can price e-books for that much and expect sales to flourish? I happened to locate a print copy of the book at a discount, otherwise this book would have never been read by me. Until publishers get realistic with pricing, I will not be reading their expensive e-books on my kindle. My spending limit for e-books is $5.99 and that's on authors I have read and liked before.
I bought this book (the e-book edition) because I'm a lemming, sort of.
strongly recommended it, so it caught my attention. I wasn't familiar with Victor Gischler, but has recommended some fine books to me in the past. So what the heck!
Just like I don't like to start a book in the middle, I don't like reading a new (to me) author's work without starting at the beginning. So I mentally dog-eared this recommendation and started with Gischler's first book, Gun Monkeys. I could tell before I was even half way through Gun Monkeys that I was an instant Gischler fan. So I quickly bought the versions of the rest of his books (The Pistol Poets,Suicide Squeeze,Shotgun Opera, and of course Go-Go Girls of the Apocalypse A Novel) so I could read them one after another, just like the chain smoking characters in his other books.
It took me about a month to get through his first four books. They were all good reads, so I didn't want to rush too quickly.
My favorite thing about Go-Go girls was how different it was from the rest of his stories the settings, the characters, the situation, and the conflicts were all unique to this book. I wouldn't say these aspects were "better" or "worse" than his other books, but they were dissimilar enough that I didn't feel like this was just a retread version of his previous novels.
The set up for the apocalypse was eerily believable. The west coast "big one" was a little bit farfetched to me, but that's only because I live in So Cal and am in total denial of the next big quake (the big quakes in '71 and '94 didn't kill me, so why should the next one?). The chain of events that the big quake set off were totally believable. One thing led to another, and then the world was kaput.
I could totally relate to the protagonist's predicament too. Without going into any details, he missed the nitty-gritty experience of the first years of the post-apocalypse. He seemed to be playing catch up through the rest of the story. He only survived due to his good luck and resolve.
I can only hope that if I live long enough to see the world that he describes, that the JD distillery survives intact and is available as cheaply as it is in Gischler's world. I suppose a regular supply of Diet Coke would be too much to ask for, but I'd find a way to adapt.
So out of a possible five stars I'm definitely giving it a five. If the scale were 1-10, I'd probably give it a nine. Then again, if it were 1-100, I'd give it a 93. So it's no stretch to round up to five.
Now my only disappointment is that I've consumed all of Gischler's books and will have to wait a while for the next one.
This is hands-down my favorite book! I have ordered this book for myself and ordered two more copies for friends. Have read other books by Victor Gischler and they all are fantastic.
The premise of a world after an apocalypse isn't new, but I like his take on what happens. He brings us down to the basics in that we will do pretty much whatever to survive, yet, we are still social creatures and need companionship. It also goes to show that even after an apocalypse, if you have whatever you want in this world, someone will try to steal it, or you will be jealous of someone who has something insignificant that you don't, and start a war to take it. Oh and if you wind up in paradise, eventually you'll get bored and want to move on.
Funny and unique. Well worth a read.
