Once again Burrowes gives her readers a gent to die for. Sir John Dewey Fanning or Sir Jack to the locals, is the local magistrate who is very creative in dealing with the mishaps which occasionally come up in his little village and the surrounding area. When his enterprising mama is on her way for a visit, he begs/borrows/steals Axel and Abigail Belmont's jewel of a manager - Miss Madeline Hennessey - who actually doesn't want to be borrowed, to come and manage his household while his mama is entrenched. Although Madeline is set up as mama's companion, she will be the go to person for everything while mama's there. Although I haven't yet read it, Axel's and Abigail's story was told in - Axel (The Jaded Gentlemen) (Volume 3).The puzzle comes into play when Jack learns Madeline was raised as gentry, but wound up going into service when she was a young teen-ager. She has two local impoverished aunts for whom she continually tries to stretch her funds lest they starve. Some of the background of her life is simply awful, but the reader is given only the highlights, such as the fact she was beaten nearly every day for the first year of her life in service. That was difficult to take.
Jack's former life was in the King's army in India where he lived, loved and had miseries of his own including months of being confined to a small cell, while being starved and tortured. The question(s) become - can Jack move past his own demons and can Madeline become dependent upon a man when she's so accustomed to having to depend upon her own wits and ability to manage?
There are some nice secondary characters to round out the story - Jack's Indian butler, Madeline's impoverished aunts, Jack's younger brother Jeremy, who very nearly steals the show, Jack's mama, the neighbors from whom Jack steals Madeline, Charlie, the ram extraordinaire who enjoys servicing the local ewes and others. Even Lord Valentine Wyndham makes a show toward the very end of the book. The standout joy of the story is, once again, Grace Burrowes' ability to give us her standard, all around, nearly perfect male hero. Jack has a lot in common with Burrowes' other manly, yet sensitive males who are, pure and simple - endearing. Where are these guys in real life??? That is the question.

Jack The Jaded Gentlemen Book 4 edition by Grace Burrowes Romance eBooks Reviews
These books are deceptive. While appearing to start slowly, they suck me in until I'm so wrapped up in the characters that I shut the books disappointed that I can't spend more time with these people.
Once again, an unexpected plot twist I never saw coming and subtle tension that creeps up on me until I completely snapped at someone for interrupting me at a crucial point. I still can't figure out how I get so involved in fictional characters' lives, but I hated to put it down.
I've got one left to read and then I'll be joining the growing ranks of readers eagerly awaiting the next one. Write faster, darn you!
I am a big fan of Grace Burrowes. Her elegant prose, lush descriptions, and memorable characters make for wonderful reading. Having said that, "Jack" is, well, bland. The main characters are, as most of Burrowes', flawed but decent. Their personal baggage creates difficulties and misunderstandings, and the gist of the plot is how they work through it. But there is something lacking in this and the other books of this series and it's hard to figure out exactly what it is. It is still a good story to read and enjoy, but it just lacks sparkle and that special something that sets Grace Burrowes apart from other authors of this genre. I felt like the book wanted you to just hurry up finish reading it! I would give it three and a half stars. A good book that missed out on being a great one.
If you have read my reviews before you know I really hate sexually explicit books, but this book is so sweet and romantic I can't hate it. I try to skim over the "sinfull" parts as much as I can but this book has too many to skim them all. Sir Jack is the kind of hero every woman dreams of. Madeline Hennessey is the housekeeper/woman of all duties from the previous book in the series where she worked for Jack/s neighbor, Axel Belmont when he was falling in love with the lady that became Mrs. Belmont. She had come to Axel's home when she was hired by his first wife when Madeline was only a girl. She had stayed on to raise Axel's sons after the first wife died, then helped Abigail fall in love with Axel and become the second Mrs. Belmont. Now Jack comes to the Belmont home to ask his friend Axel for help. Jack's mother is coming to stay the day after Christmas and over the New Year. Jack is dreading keeping her occupied and happy because she is impossible to please. Later we find out she isn't impossible to please, she just likes to complain all the time even when she is pleased with something. LOL
Axel and Abigail's solution is to send Madeline to Jack's house to bring everything into order and pretend to be a companion Jack has hired for his mother while she is visiting. Madeline doesn't want to go because the Belmont home has been her home for the past 10 years and she is afraid they don't need her anymore. She suspects they are pushing her out. Of course, what they are really doing is playing matchmaker for Jack and Madeline. The sexual frustration when they think the other isn't interested in them is pretty much the plot of the book.
Jack's mother is coming in order to play matchmaker as well. She even brings the young lady, Lucy Anne, she wants Jack to marry but doesn't let him know about it until they arrive. Also, along for the visit is his brother, Jeremy, who is a Vicar and currently serving a Bishop in London. Fortunately, Lucy Anne is endlessly patient with Jack's mother and dutifully does everything Mama tells her to try to capture Jack's attentions. But, it looks like someone else is noticing her more than Jack is.
There is lots more going on in the story but I don't want to spoil your fun. All the characters are wonderful, the writing it great, no major editing or spelling errors that I noticed. Lots of romantic love and sexuality.
This is the fourth and last of "the Jaded Gentleman" series, so far, and I have enjoyed them all. I like Grace Burrowes' writing so much I have purchased all the Wyndham novels and can't wait to read them. I hope she continues to write more great stories.
