Tapestry of War Jane MacKenzie Books

This well-researched novel portrays the lengthy battle for North Africa during WW2, as seen by a journalist in Alexandria and a Scots naval man she meets. The back cover of the book depicts coastal Scotland, and in this setting we find the sister of our hero, who is nursing, administering rehab to war wounded men, and observing the influx of GIs and ships to the Clyde.

I found the writer's style with conversations slightly annoying, as Fran the journalist and editor constantly speaks with exclamation marks! Oh bother! What a fuss! Maybe that is how socialites did speak at the time. However, this can be overlooked in the face of class consciousness, Free French versus all the other kinds of French, the mood in Egypt turning against the British, the struggle to supply Malta, the well-intentioned American officers pouring far too much drink for those no longer used to it, the dilemmas faced by young people who want to go to aid the war but can't leave parents, or else have to go but leave fiancees.

Soak up the atmosphere and learn about the battles. There are love stories through the tale, some shaky, others strong, some ill-fated, others through class barriers. And there are tragedies. This book is well worth reading. I'm very glad I read it as I am now better informed, and I enjoyed the female journalist particularly.

I received a review copy from Fresh Fiction. This is an unbiased review.

Tapestry of War Jane MacKenzie Books Reviews

Just ok! I wanted it to have more depth and emotion but sadly lacking in both. If you are a fan of WW 2 historical fiction/romance this book has the history but weak romance.
What an atmospheric read. I love novels where two threads fit together and where the stories of two unconnected characters intertwine but this is one which does it particularly well for me.

Fran and Alexandria are from two very different places and stations in life but their worries are the same. The war is ongoing and getting worse. Their lives are getting more and more complicated and uncertain and all around them, uncertainty is their neighbour.
Catriona dreams of being a nurse and helping servicemen on the front line. What must it have been like to have been confronted with the soldiers at home and then want to go and help them in the field. Similarly, for Catriona, as the forces of Rommel’s army advance, her world of luxury comes into question. I liked the way how the two women shared a story despite being miles apart and how the two characters developed throughout the novel.

The background and history to this novel is quite something.I had no idea of the Free French navy along the Clyde nor the heroics and actions of the men. The heartbreaking efforts of the hospital staff has been written with accounts of real incidents and this definitely brings another level of authenticity to the story.

Alexandria and the Isle of Islay shine as the two locations are central to the plot and it’s an interesting parallel of two places linked by war I had not linked before. Their war stories and community spirit are severely tested and it’s a fascinating insight into two very different countries, cultures and opinions of the time.

It’s like reading a historical account but being there at the same time. Very immersive and an interesting part of history I’m pleased I’ve been able to discover.
